Montserrat Torrent Organ
This project dates from 1967 and is the work ofthe two organbuilders Gabriel Blancafort and Georges Lhôte under the musical supervision of Montserrat Torrent.
With a baroque sound and tracker action, it has 49 stops and 3,481 pipes, spread over three manuals with 56 C-g notes and a 32-note C-g pedal.
In 1967, the construction of the Positive Division (Cadireta), a provisional console and two pedal towers not yet operational were completed. Unfortunately, circumstances at the time prevented the organ project from being completed and the organ has remained unfinished for the last fifty years.
On December 3rd 2021 the new organ bearing the name of Montserrat Torrent was partially inaugurated. This first part, with the central furniture, the console and the major organ with 7 registers, has been built by Blancafort Orgueners de Montserrat under the direction of Albert Blancafort. He will also take care of finishing the instrument with the third keyboard, the pedal body and the rest of registers.
This instrument will fill a gap in Barcelona: it will be the only large Baroque-style organ (with 3 manuals and 16’ façade pipes) to be able to perform in a grand manner the great works of the Baroque and Iberian repertoires, two of Montserrat Torrent’s great specialties.
The church of Sant Felip Neri is the ideal venue to house an instrument like this thanks to its superb acoustics, the baroque atmosphere of the church and its location in the center of Barcelona.
A technical committee has thoroughly studied the 1967 project and adjusted it to the experience gained over the last fifty years.
